New York Saxophonist Brings International Flavour to 2016 Jazz Series

Internationally acclaimed saxophonist Will Vinson will lead a stellar band of Australian jazz icons when he performs at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music later this month.

Originally from London, Vinson has been living in New York since 1999 where he has forged an international reputation as a band leader and sideman, performing, recording and appearing with a veritable who’s who of Jazz luminaries including Kurt Elling, Chris Potter, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. His work as a sideman has not been limited to the realms jazz however, having recorded and toured internationally with music heavyweights Sufjan Stevens, Martha Wainwright and Sean Lennon.

Vinson has recorded 5 albums as leader and composer, all of which were hailed by critics and listeners alike upon release. He has assembled an all-star cast of Australian jazz virtuosos for his Australian tour, which has him visiting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Wollongong.

Included in his quartet are National Jazz Award Winners James Muller (guitar), Tim Firth (drums) and ARIA nominated bassist Sam Anning who won the National Jazz Awards Competition last year.

“We at the Con have been incredibly fortunate to present some truly world class, international musicians over the years and Will Vinson is right up there with the best of them” Says Wollongong Conservatorium Director of Jazz, Eric Dunan. “The fact that he is bringing such an incredible band, all of whom have headlined shows here in the past, is an absolute coup for the Conservatorium and jazz fans in Wollongong.”
