Wollongong Workshop Theatre is proud to present Sebastian, a new work by Illawarra playwright Stephen Goldrick (co-writer of Anvil and The Pyjama Girl).
Sebastian is set in a mythic Sydney of the 1970’s. Dave is a garbo who sings regularly to practice for the People’s Messiah at the Opera House. He idealizes his late wife, a second-rate club entertainer, while his daughter Josephine is afraid to even open her mouth, worried that she can’t live up to her father’s expectations.
Josephine creates Sebastian, a Napoleonic clown, and they are allies as Josie builds her confidence while Dave struggles with his obsessions. The father and daughter’s imagined worlds clash as they deal with grief, expectations and artistic independence. Experts jump in with varied and often comic results. Even the angels and Dave's late wife join in the chaotic, sometimes tragic, but ultimately hopeful theatrical journey.
Shortlisted for the National Playwrights Conference, the assessors called the play “lively and bold in its frank use of the possibilities of the theatre”. Come along and let your imagination run away with you!
Sebastian is playing at Wollongong Workshop Theatre, 190 Gipps Rd Gwynneville, from October 9 - 24. Tickets available via our website.
