U3A is an acronym for University of the Third Age. The Third Age refers to the period of life when people have retired and are looking for enjoyable activities while the word “university” is used in its earliest sense – “a community of people who get together to help each other in a learning/social experience.”
There are no formal entry requirements, no examinations and no “awards” – just opportunities to learn for the fun of it in a socially supportive and informal environment. It is open to anyone who has reached their “Third Age”.
Wollongong U3A is one of over 60 U3As in NSW that make up part of the national and international U3A movement. Our aim is to offer affordable learning opportunities that help keep the brain stimulated and the body active in order to contribute to positive ageing and well-being.
We gather on Monday and Thursday mornings at The Salvation Army Conference Centre 11-13 Burelli Street Wollongong where either invited experts or our own members deliver talks/presentations that cover the full range of human experience – everything from history, science, biography, travel, creative arts through to sport, music and health and more. Our Book Club and Current Affairs group follow those talks on Mondays and our Film Appreciation group shows and discusses a selected movie on Thursdays.
Small group activities also take place at Wollongong City Library on Tuesday mornings (Philosophy), Friday mornings (Photography); and also at Collegians Wollongong on Friday mornings (Mahjong).
