Wollongong Conservatorium Of Music Jazz Showcase featuring Hammerhead
Students of the Wollongong Conservatorium Jazz Program will get a chance to play alongside some truly world class musicians these school holidays as Sydney based band Hammerhead headline the upcoming Wollongong Jazz Showcase Concert on Sunday the 10th of April.
Lead by saxophonist Jason Bruer, Hammerhead represents a revival of the hard swinging, heavy grooving “hard-bop” jazz movement of the 1950’s and 60’s – a culmination of the common musical aspirations of Bruer and drummer Duncan Archibald – and features Andrew Robertson on alto sax, Ray Cassar on trumpet, and Tim Bruer on piano.
Bruer, like the other members of his stellar band, is a veteran of the Sydney music scene and has had a storied international career. Having performed and recorded alongside music legends such as Sting, BB King, Van Morrison and Eric Clapton; been part of the house band for popular TV chat shows such as “later with Jules Holland” as well as playing on many TV and movie theme tunes such as “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” Bruer has a vast wealth of talent and performance experience, something which Eric Dunan, Director of Jazz Studies at the Wollongong Conservtorium Of Music, believes will inspire the students of the Jazz Program.
“For nearly 15 years I’ve been running the jazz program here at the Conservatorium and in that time I’ve realised that nothing inspires or educates quite like seeing heavyweight musicians perform live, up close and personal.” He continues: “ Jazz showcases have become an integral part of our program as they present a unique opportunity for our students to perform in front of – and sometimes with – the best musicians in the country. Then they get to sit back and watch the pros tear the house down in an exciting and intimate venue (the conservatorium auditorium). I can’t think of a better way to get a kid into playing music”
Showcase starts at 1pm and will feature 6 jazz combos and two big bands in various venues around the Conservatorium. Also performing will be the Concert Band, Junior Concert Band, and Trombone Quartet under the direction of Joe Epps and David Rooney. Hammerhead will then play two sets of original music and arrangements from their album “Mosiac” beginning at 3pm.
