A Woman of Many Hats – Ethel Hoskins Hayton Exhibition

She wasn’t rich. She wasn’t famous. She wasn’t always popular. But without her, Wollongong would be a very different place.

Ethel Hoskins Hayton immigrated to Wollongong from England in 1930, at the age of seventeen, and on her death in 1988 was described as ‘Wollongong’s most outstanding citizen’.

A professional journalist and author, she helped found the city’s Art Gallery and University. She was involved in a huge number of local organizations, and closely connected to local communities of artists, journalists, activists, migrants and scholars.

This exhibition explores Ethel’s fascinating life and the lives she touched in her sixty years in Wollongong.
