Take Your Composition to the Next Level
Designed for Music 1 and Music 2 students, these hands-on workshops explore melody, harmony, variation and musical development.
Session 1: Music 1 Composition Workshop (Years 10–11)
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Title:When Melody and Harmony Become Good Friends
This workshop explores how melody and harmony work together in composition. Students will learn how to combine a chordal narrative with melodic invention and will apply practical techniques to begin composing their own short piece during the session.
Suitable for Year 10–11 students preparing for Music 1 (both the current and new syllabus).
Session 2: Music 2 Composition Workshop (Years 11–12)
Time: 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Title:How to Take a Musical Idea All the Way to the End
This workshop explores the compositional process of variation and development, based on the concept: "A minimum of ideas vs a maximum of transformations."
Students will learn techniques for developing musical ideas into a complete work, with connections to the Music 2 mandatory topic. The concepts are also applicable to composition inspired by 1600–1900 repertoire.
Suitable for Year 12 Music 2 students, and also useful for Year 11 Music 2 students.
