KidsFest Shellharbour 2016

Come along and Belong , with KidsFest Shellharbour , the longest running FREE children’s festival in NSW. To be Held 15‑21 May 2016. KidsFest is a week-long festival celebrating Shellharbour’s children aged 0‑12 years.

Our theme Belonging sees events running throughout the week. These celebrate the Cultural, Natural & Social Assets of Shellharbour City by hosting inspired activities, run by caring organisations, in beautiful places. Community celebration brings a sense of place and a sense of belonging .

In our 2016 theme of Belonging we reflect on our place in, and our relationship with our past, our present and our future, and with one another.

A Community of Belonging through Play – KidsFest Shellharbour gets kids playing in nature, using their imaginations. Through this creative play we encourage children in thinking about what they want for the future. Over the week of KidsFest kids, parents & carers will get to engage in hundreds of FREE activities for kids, to connect with family, meet new friends and discover new places to play.

Belonging in Aboriginal Culture and European History – In 1815 some of the Illawarra’s traditional custodians led Charles Throsby and the first white settlers and their cattle down the escarpment to establish a stockyard. This marked a new chapter in the story of our area. One which we will be commemorating, 200 years on at our finale at Killalea State Park on Saturday 21 May. Here we will celebrate Aboriginal culture with ‘Welcome to Country ‘, traditional smoking ceremony, dancing, didgeridoo, bush tucker, stargazing and storytelling by the campfire.

Belonging in Multicultural Diversity – We’ll be celebrating our multicultural community through a range of activities including ‘ Foods-of-the-World’ where kids learn how to prepare delicious food from cultures across the globe.

Belonging in Community Service, Access and Assistance – Events such as ‘The Emergency Services Expo’ on Tuesday 17 May is focused on ensuring accessible participation for children with a disability. At this event NSW Rural Fire Services, Fire Rescue NSW, NSW Police and NSW Ambulance all come together to showcase their important work and give children increased confidence to know what to do in an emergency.

Intergenerational Belonging – At KidsFest we’ll be celebrating grandparents and offering our respect to Elders past and present. Grandparents and their families will be our guests of honour riding the steam trains at our opening event at Illawarra Light Rail Museum – Sunday 15 May .
