Westfield Matildas v Illawarra United Stingrays
The Illawarra United Stingrays will host the Australian Women’s National Team, the ‘Westfield Matildas’ on Friday 19 February at WIN Stadium, ahead of the Women’s Olympic Football Final Qualifying Round in Japan.
The match will be the Westfield Matildas final hit-out on home soil, before their first match of the 10-day tournament against 2015 World Cup runners up Japan on 19 February at Kincho Stadium in Osaka.
The Westfield Matildas also face DPR Korea, Korea Republic, Vietnam and China P.R. in the round robin tournament, in which the top two countries at the end of the competition will claim a place at the Olympic Games in Rio later this year.
Channel Seven will broadcast all of the Westfield Matildas matches in the upcoming qualifying tournament.
Stingrays stars Michelle Heyman and Caitlin Cooper are among the 22-strong Westfield Matildas squad in camp with coach Alen Stajcic to prepare for the Olympic qualifiers and are expected to play against their club-mates at WIN Stadium.
The Westfield Matildas squad also features the likes of Kyah Simon, Alanna Kennedy, Lisa De Vanna, Emily Van Egmond (currently based in Germany), Stephanie Catley and Lydia Williams.
Stingrays head coach Earle Canvin said “The Wollongong-based club was extremely proud to be able to help the Westfield Matildas in their campaign to secure a place for Australia among the 16 nations competing in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Rio, by facilitating this game”.
“It’s a great opportunity for the Stingrays to show our and the region’s support for the Westfield Matildas, to have 2 current players involved Caitlin Cooper & Michelle Heyman and hopefully a returning Caitlin Foord would give or region 3 players in the squad.”
The game would not be possible without the support of local business (details to come), the Wollongong Wolves, Football South Coast and the WIN Sports & Entertainment Centres. The Illawarra Stingrays greatly appreciate their commitment to the Stingrays & Women’s football.
Admission is free, so come along & support the Westfield Matildas & the Illawarra United Stingrays.
Players from both squad will be available on the completion of the game for photo’s & autographs.
