Say It, Sing It – Live at Wollongong Mall
Live spoken word poetry and original songs have been keeping audiences enraptured and warm on one Friday night a month in Wollongong Mall. The night of music and poetry has been hosted on the mall stage and in local cafes, with featured local writers and songwriters, open mic heats, and good local food to add to a great night out.
The 8th of July will be the 3rd Say it Sing it event in Wollongong. The South Coast Writers Centre (SCWC) and Wollongong City Council have partnered to bring poets and songwriters onto the stage of Wollongong Mall for nights of spoken word poetry, music and competition in a project called Say It, Sing It.
“Hearing live poetry with live music is such a powerful collaboration not usually seen together. People are blown away by how many talented performers are standing up and making it more accessible to the general public who may not have been aware of our writers community before.”
¾ Mignon Lee-Warden, SCWC Events Coordinator.
The public event will involve two featured artists taking the stage, followed by an open mic section inviting audience members to get involved.
Prizes to be won include dinner for two at a local restaurant, and as part of the event, local cafes will hold pop-up performances following the outside competition, and sell food and drinks at specially discounted prices. This month’s café host after the stage will be winner of ‘Café of the Year’ in the Illawarra, “The Square”.
The upcoming Say It Sing It night on the 8th of July will feature Rose Cole, the winner of the first open mic competition as the musical talent, and Ratsack as the featured poet.
At 13 years old, Rose Cole has a formidable and ever expanding repertoire of original songs that she has recently recorded, and is causing heads to turn, performing from the Illawarra to Sydney and the Southern Highlands. Ratsack grew up in the Northern Illawarra, his upbringing including many community theatre experiences, and years later while living in the US; he discovered the spoken word genre. Our talented and dynamic MC will once again be slam poet Lorin Elizabeth.
The project is running monthly until October, and kicked off on the 6th of May.
