The Illawarra Flame Festival

The Illawarra Science Hub are excited to present the second Illawarra Flame Festival on Sunday 19th August.

Events will take place at Wisemans Park, The Wollongong Workshop Theatre and St Brigid’s Primary School from 10am – 2pm.

This free event is looking at how flame affects our lives through physics, biology and technology with presentations from local scientists, biologists and performers.

Wisemans Park

In the park there will be information stalls, free children’s activities and performances from 10am – 2pm.

Performances include a Science Show and fire Busking from the Science Space, The Eaton Gorge Theatre and The Wollongong Botantic Garden. There will also be live music from The Flame Three and Elemental Moves.

Stalls include the RFS fire truck, Fire Ready, Bushcare, Urban Diversity, flame tree propagation thanks to the Wollongong Botanic Garden, Bunnings and Ecologic.

Guided Walk with Local Botanist Carl Glaister

At 10.30am and 12.30pm local botanist Carl Glaister will be taking a guided walk through the habitat that surrounds Wisemans Park.

It is incredible the amount of unique plant life that is growing so close to high density residential areas.” Carl said. “I am really looking forward to sharing this exploration through the nearby forest as a part of the Festival.” – Carl Glaister

Speaker Series – Wollongong Workshop Theatre

At 10.30am a speaker series commences in the Wollongong Workshop Theatre at 190 Gipps Road, located directly opposite the park.

Presenters include Clarence Slokee and John Gabrielle from the ABC, Michael Connor and a Science of Fire show from the UOW Physics Society finishing with a Poetry Exhibition all about Flame and Fire finishing at 3pm.

3D Printing Workshops at St Brigid’s

At 10.30am and 12.30pm there will be free 3D printing workshops at St Brigid’s conducted by MobFab.

The 3D printing workshops for the Illawarra Flame Tree Festival will show you how to model and customise your own flame tree flower in an easy to use 3D modelling software. Then you can stand back and watch your Flame tree flower magically come to life on the 3D printer!

These workshops are suitable for children 8 and grown ups.
