Project Bucephalus took home in 2025 the Impact Award at the FIRST Championships in the USA, the single highest award in the global program! Project Bucephalus Robotics - are only the 4th team outside the USA to ever receive this honour in 32 years - and they’re from right here in the Illawarra! Recognised for their groundbreaking work in STEM education, they’ve officially joined the FIRST Hall of Fame.
And the fun doesn’t stop there.....
Running since 2011, this Wollongong-based group offers dynamic robotics workshops - their after-school and school holiday workshops are an excellent activity for STEM-minded (or LEGO-obsessed) kids!
These workshops are a fantastic way to spark creativity, build problem-solving skills, and make new friends. Bookings for all events are made through their TryBooking page and you can apply your Creative Kids voucher during registration. To obtain your voucher or get more information regarding the Creative Kids program visit service.nsw.gov.au.
This is their standard beginner course. Students are introduced to LEGO® Robotics, learning the basics of robotics and programming as they build robots capable of reacting to their environment and making simple decisions. The second day of the workshop finishes with the ever-popular “Robot Sumo” challenge and a tournament where all families are welcome. No previous experience is required. While the activity is designed to be suitable for ages 7 and up, we will accept younger students if they are accompanied by an adult.
Note: Introduction to Robotics is our recommended course for novice students. However, Grand Sumo can serve as an alternate for students who feel the Introduction course is too simple. Contact Us if you would like more information.
3-2-1 Fight! In Grand Sumo, students will explore the possibilities in one of the favourite Robo Camp activities as they design custom robots to autonomously fight robot sumo matches. Extra building options and advanced code will be offered to anyone interested in taking their fighting skills to the next level! This course caters to both Novice and Advanced skill levels, and is a mix of free-range and guided material. Students will be led through complex programming, and then encouraged to design and build robots to fight in a sumo ring. While the activity is designed to be suitable for ages 7 and up, we will accept younger students if they are accompanied by an adult. Contact Us if you would like more information.
Note: Introduction to Robotics is our recommended course for novice students. However, Grand Sumo can serve as an alternate for students who feel the Introduction course is too simple.
