Science Space's brand new after school program launches on Tuesday 10th Feb 2026!
STEAM Squad provides the opportunity for curious kids to explore science, technology, engineering and maths in hands-on, creative ways.
STEAM Squad sessions may involve the use of chemicals, hand tools, electronic equipment and machinery (including 3D printers, laser cutters and sewing machines). All participants are expected to behave respectfully, follow staff instructions, and treat equipment and other participants with care at all times.
To help us ensure safety and positive participation for everyone, please advise us at the time of booking of any additional needs or requirements. Due to the nature of some activities, parents or carers may be encouraged to stay and support children who require 1:1 assistance.
Tuesday 10th Feb - Slime Chemistry
Explore the fascinating chemistry of fluids and polymers as we make slime! Following the scientific method, we’ll mix, test, and refine different slime recipes, then personalise our creations with fun mix-ins to make it uniquely yours
Tuesday 17th Feb - Fizzy Chemistry
This week is bursting with bubbles, reactions, and explosive fun! We will explore the science of acids, taste and flavour as we make homemade lemonade and sherbet, then investigate gas reactions by launching spectacular Coke and Mentos geysers
Tuesday 24th Feb - Fire & Ice
Explore extreme temperatures through exciting demos and hands-on experiments! From fireproof balloons and instant snow to spectacular demonstrations and liquid nitrogen ice cream, this week brings the science of heat and cold to life!
Tuesday 3rd March - Astronomy
Blast off this week as we journey through our Solar System and galaxy in a live, interactive Planetarium show. Learn how to find South, discover famous constellations, and create your own custom constellation pictures and galaxy-inspired artworks.
Tuesday 10th March - Palaeontology
Step back in time with a dino-mite week all about dinosaurs and fossils! Cast your own fossils, build a fossil lake model, examine real fossils under a microscope, and create fossil rubbings while uncovering clues from Earth’s prehistoric past.
Tuesday 17th March - Geology
Discover the wonders of geology as we explore the science of rocks and minerals. Examine sparkling gems under a microscope, grow your own crystals, build 3D crystal models, and choose a real tumbled gemstone to take home.
Tuesday 24th March - Backyard Science
Explore the world of biology as we investigate animals, insects, and camouflage. Invent your own never-before-seen species (complete with a Latin scientific name!), study real taxidermy specimens from the UOW collection, and design a custom terrarium habitat.
Tuesday 31st March - Forensic Science
UOW Science Space turns into a crime scene as we tackle the mystery of Who Stole the M&Ms! Follow clues around the building and use real forensic techniques like fingerprinting, chromatography, and microscopic evidence. Parents are invited to come along our special end of term week to help us crack the case!
